Re William Thomson of Clovenfords Vineries
William Thomson was my Great, great grandfather. I have done some extra research on his visit to the French Horticultural event in Paris by contacting the Horticultural Society in France. In their records he was presented with a ‘Vermillion Medal’ for an ‘Unexpected Entry.’ I guess he was competing with grapes grown in open air conditions so his entry could not fairly be compared with grapes in the same class. The family story had always been that it was a Gold Medal!
Many visitors came to Clovenfords to see his work including a Frenchman from Roubaix, a M Anatole Cordonnier who wrote about the cultivation of grapes under glass by William Thomson in his book on fertiliser Les Engrais Pratiques.
